About me:
My name is Azalea and I am an undergrad at Arizona State University pursuing a BFA in both drawing and photography. I work as a full time artist in Phoenix. This is where I'll be sharing some of my projects from classes, things I'm currently working on, and other things that interest me.

Wood Drawers Project

Picture

This past semester I took a wood class for the first time and I loved it. About a year before I took a class in which we were required to make a piece out of wood and I loved it so I wanted to take an actual wood class. I usually only take drawing and photography classes, and even though the same basic elements of design still apply, working with wood is very different than anything else. I'm used to building on what I have, and wood is the opposite. You start with a block of wood then take away wood to get what you want. It's definitely been a really good challenge though. I've learned a lot.

Here's a photo of how I plan a project out before I start. I always make a preliminary sketch before I start a bigger piece, even if it's a drawing. I made a sketch of how I wanted the entire thing to look at the end, the different pieces I needed for the entire thing, and smaller drawings of the details.

I wanted to share my final project from last semester. I wanted to make something fun that could still be used, but one of the requirements were that we couldn't use any glue, which proved to be even more challenging than I originally thought it would be, but again, I learned a lot from it. The entire thing is held together by dowels. I also used a band saw and a Foredom wood carving tool for most of it. To paint it I used a blueish green milk paint. The finish of the paint is really nice, the only problem is that it starts peeling quickly.  I've included pictures of the very beginning, where it's just a block of wood, to the very end.

Here's
the end product. I'm really happy with how it turned out considering it was the first semester I really started working with wood and power tools. I'll post the next wood project that I'm working on soon.

Thanks for looking!
