An Art School Blog

About me:
My name is Azalea and I am an undergrad at Arizona State University pursuing a BFA in both drawing and photography. I work as a full time artist in Phoenix. This is where I'll be sharing some of my projects from classes, things I'm currently working on, and other things that interest me.

Portrait of a Generation: Wooden Rotary Phone

I took three studio classes this semester along with four normal classes, which is more than I should be taking, but I love taking studio classes. One of the studio classes I took was Wood 2 and I thought I'd share one of the projects I spent a majority of the semester on.

The idea is that it's a  portrait of our generation today. We constantly have our phones and everyday we try to make them more personalized and know more about ourselves. Originally the idea was to have a hand coming out of an Iphone, but our smartphones are so small and plain that it wouldn't have worked out very well. So I decided to make an old rotary phone with a hand coming out of one side of the phone.

This is the first time I've done a project like this and it was pretty challenging but I'm glad I did it. I learned a lot and it actually came out a lot better than I thought it would be.

Process:

Originally I only had a block of wood but it wasn't big enough for the body of the phone, so I had to cut it in half and glue the 2 pieces together to make a thicker piece. I then cut out the general shape with a band saw.

In the photo above you can see how I cut the wood out then draw on it to plan where I'm going to carve away wood. On the left I was in the process of slowly removing more and more wood from the hand. Once I finished carving and sanding it I bleached it all.
Thanks for looking!!!
